HOW TO PAINT A FENCE AND WHAT TOOLS YOU CAN USE

Category: Paint & Decorating Materials
Published:

Painting a fence is a relatively straightforward job, however to do it right there are a few things to keep in mind to make your job easy. Once you’ve picked the colour you want to use, here are a few tips to get the perfect look for your outdoor space.

PREPARATION

The first thing to do is pick a dry day, warm if possible, and not a lot of wind. This will reduce the paint spraying your garden as well as the fence, and also will dry quicker and more even. Your fence should be completely dry before painting so don’t do it just after a rain shower.

You should pick a weather resistant paint for the job – these usually come in a vast number of colours so you’re pretty much guaranteed to get one you like. The correct paint will prolong the life of the wood and time spend between re-painting.

You should trim back any trees or plants to ensure you have enough space to work. Cover any plants and grass with plastic sheeting to protect them from paint splatters.

Use a power hose to remove any dirt or debris from the fence surface. If needed, use a scrubbing brush to remove mould.

PAINTING A FENCE FAST

A faster way to paint your fence will be to use the RONSEAL Precision Finish Fence Sprayer. It holds 5litres and can get coverage of around 6 fence panels at a time.

If you choose to stick with a paintbrush, be sure to follow the wood grain as it will allow coverage over a larger surface quicker, and give a smoother finish.

Most fence paints only require one coat, however if you think it needs a second coat be sure to wait till its completely dry first.

Clean your brushes in warm, soapy water to preserve them for future use. You might need white spirit if the paint you’ve used is oil-based.

Store everything away in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and off the floor to avoid rusting.
