As winter approaches, the days grow shorter and the temperature drops, which calls for certain maintenance and upkeep tasks to be carried out. Many assume that caring for their patio is something to add to their spring or summer task list. However, there’s plenty that needs to be done towards the end of the year in order to protect your patio from the winter elements.
To protect your patio over winter and to keep it looking fresh in time for spring and summer, use our top tips for the ultimate winter patio preparation. These steps should be carried out before the icy cold weather makes its way into your garden.

STORE YOUR PATIO FURNITURE PROPERLY
To protect your patio furniture and keep it as good as new ready for another year of use, it’s best to store it away indoors over the winter months. If you have a shed or garage, try to find some space to fit in your table, chairs and other furniture, before the rain, ice, snow and sleet make an appearance.
Aluminium and wooden furniture are durable enough to be kept outdoors if needs be, but wicker, rattan or steel furniture must always be kept under shelter in the winter.

SWEEP AWAY DEBRIS FROM YOUR PATIO
Use a brush to sweep away any leaves and any other debris from your patio, to prevent any stains from forming over winter and to prevent mould, fungus or algae from growing.
You should keep an eye out for any additional debris that lands onto your patio during the run up to winter. Autumn drops a huge amount of leaves, so you’ll want to make sure you’re clearing as much of this debris away so that the leaves don’t have time to stick to your patio and cause stains that might never go away.
GIVE YOUR PATIO A STAIN SPOT CHECK
Once you’ve cleared away the debris, run your eyes over your patio and look for any stains that have already formed.
